This is a delicious homemade Granny Smith apple pie with a graham cracker crust and oatmeal. Easy to make and almost healthy if you don’t count the sugar. Maybe you can experiment on your own for a sweet alternative for your version of a homemade apple pie.
I love Granny Smith apples. Not only do I think they are the best apple for pies, but my maiden name was Smith and I had a Granny Smith. She was a very accomplished woman in her day. She was a florist, almost always wore a business suit, her nails were always polished and her hair always styled. She liked to travel and always brought my mother fine china tea cups from many countries. Some of which I have now.
Although this isn’t her recipe, I cannot help but remember her whenever I make a homemade Granny Smith apple pie. This recipe, as with a lot of my recipes, came about because of ingredients I had on hand. Plus, I was lazy and didn’t want to roll out a pie crust. It was a hit and I thought it deserved a spot on my blog.
Homemade Granny Smith Apple Pie | 3 Steps
1-1/2 c. crushed graham crackers
1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 stick butter
Combine all ingredients and press into glass pie pan. Bake at 325° for 30 minutes. Should be slightly browned.
Apple Pie Filling:
4 c. chopped Granny Smith Apples
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 T. butter
1/2 c. oatmeal
1/4 c. flour
1/4 c. cold water
4 T. caramel topping
Combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter in large frying pan. On medium heat, saute apples till semi-soft (approx. 15-20 minutes). The butter, sugar and juice from the apples should start to form a syrup.
Add oatmeal to apple mixture and mix thoroughly.
Mix flour with water and pour into frying pan. Bring to boil and cook another 5 minutes.
Pour apple mixture on already cooked graham cracker crust.
Drizzle caramel topping evenly over top of apples.
Topping for Pie:
3/4 c. crushed graham crackers
1/2 c. oatmeal
1/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
4 T. softened butter
Combine all ingredients. Mix thoroughly till butter and dry ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Sprinkle on top of apples.
Place pie back in 375° oven for 10 minutes. Just till topping starts to get lightly browned.
Can be served warm with ice-cream, sour cream or just as is. It also freezes well.
